Perspectives outside the "Friend Box"

I present to you two perspectives on dating a friend. First, the cautionary tale by Musiq Soulchild (linked it, because Youtube disabled embedding) vs. the dive-right-in lobby by Corinne Bailey Rae:

What say you, dear readers? What have you done to get out of the friend box, and how'd that turn out for you?

  1. Well, when I was considering whether to get out of the friend box, I received various warnings that basically fell into two categories:
1 - Be sure of your intentions because a lot of people have chosen to date a friend because it was comfortable and both parties ended up unhappy and unsatisfied
2 - Don't let this great opportunity to be with an individual who you share such great chemistry with and who would treat you so wonderfully to pass you by

I finally realized that my comfort zone was actually one in which I was endlessly drawn to dead-end relationships and I chose to break out of that comfort zone by breaking out of the friend box and giving a relationship with real potential a shot. Doing so has actually enhanced our friendship to another level and the guy who was formerly my best guy-friend is now my best friend.
